Palo Duro Canyon in January

Hey y'all. Planning to hit up Palo Duro in late January for my birthday. I booked a cabin and will have my loyal adventuring companion (read 9-year-old Zoe) along for the trip.

I haven't been out that way since I was a kid, so I was hoping for some input on where to stop and what to check out along the way: places to eat, side attractions, etc.

Naturally, if any of y'all are interested in coming along, you're more than welcome.

While I've backpacked Palo Duro, I completely hate you because you are staying in one of the cabins. That is mega super high on my bucket list! So jelly!!!

Things from memory:

Cuney, TX- Stop by Al's BBQ. Al's been in his portable building on the side of the road for over 30 years. While his BBQ is fairly good, his desserts are incredible. He bakes them fresh every day. I've had his chocolate chip loaf, tea cakes and cobbler so far. If a '90's what Dodge truck is out there, Al's there.

Seven Points, TX- head a little out of the way off of 175 to go get a pint at Seven Points Brewery. Nice little brewery with an incredible brown ale and a grilled cheese Zoe will enjoy

Decatur, TX- if you can get to Decatur by 2pm, stop by the Whistle Stop for some fine pie. If after 2pm, go to the town square. Zoe will love the candy shop (Hey Sugar Candy Store) downtown while you find yourself taking photos of the courthouse and The Waggoner mansion.

Bowie, TX - Of course this is where the world's largest Bowie knife is. Make sure you stop and get some pics of it. 1555 E Wise St, Bowie, TX 76230. Also, great food (and pie) at Sweet Boys Diner

Electra, TX - Watch the Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning "War of the Worlds" before making the trip. Then make sure you are going through Electra when it is dusk, dawn, heavy rain or whatever gives low visibility. The wind farms never fall to give the whillies with full blown mechanophobia.

Quitaque, TX Great little eatery at The Coffee Mill And Mercantile. They literally had everything on the menu. Bubble tea.....check. Chocolate Malts....check. Ruben sandwich....check. So damn good!

Turkey, TX. Home of Bob Wills. BBQ place I ate at was great, but now out of business. The ice cream parlor on the main strip is still good though.

Amarillo, TX. (1) The Big Texan- the tourist trap worth stopping at. Make it happen. No excuses!, (2) Cadillac Ranch- bring a can of spray paint for Zoe. She'll have a blast.
